If you are aware of any non-Japanese students who would be appropriate for recommendation by the University, are expected to come to Japan in October, 2007 to be enrolled in our Graduate School (individuals who will definitely be able to come to Japan as new students between October 1, 2007 and October 7, 2007) and will meet the eligibility requirements listed below, please submit documents necessary for application to the Student Welfare Section of the Student Affairs Division by the following deadline. --> Documents submission deadline: Friday, February 23, 2007 (This deadline must be strictly observed.) * Applicants are requested to check item "4. Documents for application" stated below to make sure that all required documents have been prepared before submission. Please note that applications which contain any incomplete documents, or have missed the deadline will not be accepted with no exceptions. * Recommending faculty members are required to interview applicants in person if possible. If not possible, three faculty members from the graduate department chosen by the applicant are required to respectively interview the applicant via the Internet on at least three occasions each. These faculty members are then required to prepare a comprehensive performance evaluation report based on these interviews conducted in person or via the Internet. In cases that successful applicants who have been granted the scholarship decide to decline the scholarship, this would result in a reduction of the number of students from our University who will be granted the scholarship in and after next year. Please thoroughly check item "1. Application eligibility and requirements" listed below and confirm that applicants' will to come to Japan. < Application guidelines > 1. Application eligibility requirements: (1) Eligible applicants: Non-Japanese students who will come to Japan as newcomers to study at a graduate school level institution. (2) Nationality: Individuals who have nationalities of countries of which legitimate sovereignty are acknowledged by Japanese Government. However, individuals who have obtained Japanese citizenship at the time of application to this scholarship shall not be eligible for application. (3) Age: Individuals who were born on or after April 2, 1972. (4) Academic background: Individuals who have graduated from universities or graduate schools in Japan, or who have academic abilities equal to or higher than those of a graduate of an undergraduate school in Japan (5) Major fields of study: Academic fields which applicants majored in, or other related fields These academic fields shall be limited to those for which the University of Aizu can provide education and research instruction. (6) Condition of health: Individuals who are healthy physically and mentally to complete their studies in Japan. (7) Arrival dates: Individuals for whom arrival in Japan within the period between October 1, 2007 and October 7, 2007 is definite. (8) Visa: Applicants must have obtained the "College Student" visa prior to their arrival in Japan. (9) Individuals falling under the following cases will not be considered for acceptance. 1) Individuals currently on military service or in military- affiliated positions 2) Individuals who will not be able to arrive in Japan within the period stated above. 3) Individuals who were previously governmentally supported non- Japanese students are not eligible for the scholarship unless they have had experience in education and/or research for at least three years after returning to their home countries. 4) Individuals who will receive scholarships from any organizations (including governmental organizations of their home countries) other than the Japanese Government (MEXT). 5) Applicants are not allowed either to apply to the scholarship through more than one university concurrently, or to apply to the scholarship and other scholarships ( e.g. AY 2007 governmentally financed scholarships for non Japanese students by Embassy Recommendation, JASSO short -term Student Exchange Promotion Program (inbound) Scholarship) concurrently. In cases that such concurrent applications are found, not only relevant grants of the scholarship but also all applicants of this university will be cancelled. (10) Other Recommendations will take into account the Japanese government's policy pertaining to illegal export of materials and technology related to weapons of mass-destruction, etc. Therefore, if there is a concern that an applicant's major fields might be related to production or development of weapons of mass-destruction, such an applicant shall not be recommended for this scholarship. 2. Total number of scholarship recipients: Approximately 900 students nationwide A maximum of three candidates from this university can be recommended to the Japanese Government (MEXT). If there are four or more applicants, those who belong to the universities with which The University of Aizu has signed research collaboration agreements will be given recommendation priority. 3. Details of the scholarship: (1) Amount of the scholarship: 170,000 yen per month (subject to change) (2) Tuition for scholarship recipients shall be paid by relevant universities. (3) Travel expenses: a) For travel coming to Japan Economy airfare for flight routs and periods predetermined by the Japanese Government (MEXT) will be provided. Please note that other expenses and taxes will not be covered by this scholarship. b) For return travel to recipients' home countries Economy airfare for return to recipients' home countries will be provided. (4) Scholarship period: a) Research students From October, 2007 to March, 2009 (One and a half years)* * This period may be extended by way of examination by MEXT, if a research student, who is planning to go into the Master's Program of the University of Aizu, has attained particularly excellent academic results. b) Students of the Master's Program or the Doctoral Program The period necessary for completion of the relevant Graduate School Programs specified by the University, starting from October, 2007 4. Documents for application: (a) Application Form for AY 2007 Application Form (attached sheet) Field of Specialization and Research Plan (attached sheet) (b) Certified health check data (taken within six months from the date of submission) (c) A certificate of latest graduation (or expected graduation) from the applicant's undergraduate school/graduate school (original) and a copy of his/her latest diploma (d) An academic transcript from the undergraduate/graduate program the applicant most recently completed/attended (issued by the applicant's undergraduate school or graduate school) (original) (e) Academic information certifying that the applicant is/was in the top class academically at his/her home university (e.g. GPA, ABC rankings, actual rankings in academic performance (XXth ranking within YY students), or other indexes that certify the applicant's academic performance at his/her last university) (f) A document certifying the applicant's family registry or citizenship from the applicant's country (g) A letter of recommendation to the President of the University of Aizu prepared by the Dean or those in equal or higher positions of the applicant's graduate school (h) A photograph This must be a portrait measuring 6 cm long and 4 cm wide, and must have been taken within six months of the date of submission. The photo should show the head, shoulders, and upper chest, from the front against a plain background. The applicant's nationality and name should be written clearly on the back of this photo. The photo should then be affixed to the designated space of the application form. (i) The applicant's thesis abstract (j) Any materials which objectively show the applicant's language skills and technical ability (For example, scores from TOEFL, TOEIC, Examination for Japanese University Admission for International Students (EJU), and/or Japanese Language Proficiency Test) (k) A "Comprehensive performance evaluation report" (prepared by a relevant research advisor of the University of Aizu) * Notes - Please use designated forms for above items "a," "b," and "k." Applicants are requested to prepare all these documents in A4 size (29.7 cm long and 21.0 cm wide,) using computers, etc. - Applicants are requested to prepare thesis abstracts (for item "i.") based on a concise summary of the content of their theses. 5. Selection of successful applicants and notification of results Successful applicants will be selected by the MEXT Selection Committee. MEXT will notify universities of results of the selection at the end of June, 2007 (tentative).
